Officers in attendance: Birney Young, President

                         Trevor Wilson, Vice President

Trevor also proposes the book sale take place in Posvar, rather than the Cathedral, to allow for more foot traffic.

1.32 – Social Events

1.40 – Shadow Government Policy

ARCHIVE

A majority of the student body of students enrolled in CLST Certificate Programs voted on 18 October 2013 to form a CLST-GSO.

The new organization met for the first time on 1 November 2013 and formed a provisional government of attendees to oversee the drafting of a constitution. Paulina Tomkowicz (FRIT) was appointed to represent CLST at A&S-GSO, with Jeff Klein as the alternate. Wil Upchurch was designated temporary secretary.

At its second meeting on 6 December 2013 dissolved the provisional government that had been in place since the first meeting in November, ratified its founding constitution, and elected its first slate of officers who will serve until March 2014:

Wil Upchurch (COMMRC), President

Sarah Bishop (COMMRC), Vice President

Marie Skoczylas (SOC), Secretary/Treasurer

Jeff Klein (MUSIC), Social Minister

At the last meeting, Paulina Tomkowicz (FRIT) was appointed to represent CLST at A&S-GSO, with Jeff Klein as the alternate. The constitution names the Director of the Graduate Program for Cultural Studies the de-facto advisor.

To view the constitution, click here. Suggestions for revisions or proposed amendments should be sent to Wil Upchurch

Minutes from the Jan. 6 meeting:

Agenda

1. Putting together a panel for the Cultural Studies Association annual
conference
2. A&S GSO Report – travel grant vote coming up
3. Book Sale Fundraiser
4. Brainstorming ideas to increase GSO participation and visibility
5. Next meeting
6. Upcoming officer nominations

-------------------------------------------------

1. The deadline for applying to the Cultural Studies Association annual
conference has been extended to January 27. We are talking about putting
together a panel. Will will be sending out an email so we can talk about
our common research interests, to get the discussion going. To participate
in the discussion about forming a panel, simply email him (just reply to
his email) by Friday.

(For more information on the conference:
http://www.culturalstudiesassociation.org/conference)

2. There was not an A&S GSO meeting yet this semester so nothing to
report. But they are about to pass a vote about the way travel grants get
allocated. So it might be advantageous to talk to your respective
department representative. Also, remember that CLST offers travel grants,
too!

3. We are planning a couple Book Sale fundraisers for the GSO. One will be
held in April in conjunction with CLST events (day-long conference in the
Humanities Center, date/event TBD). Another could be held on the second
floor of Posvar Hall, between the escalators – a high foot-traffic area.
We also discussed the location possibilities of the main floor of the
Cathedral of Learning, the ground floor of Posvar, or rotating through
different departments.

How much will we charge? $3 for paperbacks, $5 for hardcovers. Perhaps
less if we extend the sale to another day.

Soliciting books: Sarah will be contact/point-person to pick up books from
students and faculty. Perhaps people could drop them off with Karen, too.

Flyers: Sarah will start with a draft.

The email should go out the beginning of February (put this on the agenda
for the next meeting).

Cash will go directly to Marie. She will talk with Karen to figure out how
this will be set up.

We will need people to work the book sales after we finalize dates/times.
Trevor is interested in helping with this.

4. Brainstorming ideas to increase participation and visibility of the
CLST GSO.

- Ask faculty to hand out flyers to classes about the program and the GSO.
First day in the semester in the future, earlier on in the semester this
time around. Will will put something together and send it to Karen (it
will advertise: next meeting, pizza, upcoming officer elections). Karen
and work-study people can distribute them to different departments.
Reaching people not yet enrolled: Let people know we can talk through the
perks of enrollment in the program at/after the next meeting and they can
decide later.

- Plan a happy hour. Perhaps the week before Spring Break, at a public
place, such as the Windham Hotel (it has very cheap drinks and a nice
atmosphere). Will will talk to Jeff about planning logistics around this,
see what they could do with appetizers, costs, etc.

- Create a FaceBook page for the CLST GSO. Jeff might want to take this
on? This will be great for connecting with people, perhaps finding
roommates for conferences, etc.

- Create a Wordpress Blog to share our work. Professional Development. On
the Cultural Studies website. Trevor will help make this, will work with
Will. Lots of possibilities: Organizing conferences, posting regular
lectures, interview scholars coming to Pittsburgh or those who have taught
Common Seminars (and post non-English interviews, too), etc.

5. Next meeting: Friday, February 7, at 1pm in the usual room (Posvar
2201). We are rotating meetings this semester between first Mondays and
first Fridays of the month.

6. Officer nominations begin Feb. 1! And the election is at the March
meeting (Monday, March 3). Any member can be nominated and any member can
vote. We’ll go over this at the next meeting.
