Philosophy of Medicine

Mondays, 3-5:50PM 2121C Public Health

The practice of medicine occurs at the intersection of science and clinical skills, but also in a space where various cultural values meet the constraining conditions of institutional cultures. How should traditional questions and categories of philosophy be relevant to the range of things we call medicine? The seminar will take up this question as we explore epistemological, ethical, aesthetic, and cultural issues that pervade modern medical practice. Members of the seminar will reflect upon and discuss readings that open spaces for inquiry into medical practices, and into their conceptual, rhetorical, cultural, and representational underpinnings. Preparation of carefully framed questions in response to readings will provide focus for weekly discussions, and a short paper and research paper will be completed by the end of term.
